Meditation Programs for Better Society

Today, we are facing a myriad of forces of disintegration in societies world-wide. We face wide-ranging issues that include frustration, aggression, depression, substance abuse, crime, teenage pregnancy, violence among kids, homelessness, domestic violence and others. These issues seem to be insurmountable, but there is a very simple solution.

Sahaja Yoga is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to helping people handle problems through the use of easy-to-learn meditation techniques.

Founded in 1970 by Dr. Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi, Sahaja Yoga is currently used in over 80 countries to:

  • Strengthen families, promote self-esteem, and provide the security and positive alternatives to say "no" to drugs and violence;
  • Provide the means for people to achieve balance, contentment and better health;
  • Empower people to become a source and force for balance, peace and community;
  • Break down cultural, racial, religious and ethnic barriers for greater understanding and cooperation.

In over 80 countries and 30 years, Sahaja Yoga has been offered and taught for free to those who desire to learn the simple practice. The transformational results are healing, uplifting and universal. From India to Brazil, from South Africa to North America, Sahaja Yoga meditation has helped improve the lives and communities of hundreds of thousands of people.

Here in North America there are Sahaja Yoga centers in many states. In New York City, Sahaja Yoga's presence in drug rehabilitation centers such as Su Casa in Lower Manhattan has been found to be an effective tool to combat substance abuse.

At Riker's Island, Sahaja Yoga has been requested as a permanent workshop by social workers where over 500 inmates have learned to meditate.

This form of meditation is suitable for everyone as there is no physical exercise involved. One only has to sit comfortably in a chair and to enjoy the peace of meditation within. Meditation is achieved spontaneously with no physical or mental effort.

Our North American Community Services outreach includes running meditation classes for:

  • A battered women's shelter in Berkeley, California
  • Correctional facilities in New York and Phoenix, Arizona
  • Su Casa Rehabilitation Center, New York
  • Substance Abuse Intervention Division, The City of New York, Department of Correction
  • The Unity Church, Houston
  • Native American Social Services Office, New York
  • Meditation for Mothers - Chicago and Dallas
